Hi Maria - I don't actually know that much yet about bee keeping. I have just started, but am following the advice of some other keepers. They have told me that hives swarm so that they can split into two hives, one staying and one going to find a new home. They usually do this because they are out of room in their current hive. That's why I said I needed to harvest the honey sooner than I'd planned (I was waiting for July). From what I know, if your hive swarmed, it will still produce plenty of honey as long as part of the hive stayed in your hive (sometimes they all leave). I hope that's helpful. We'll learn about this together. :)

I'm not sure but my husband told me that my bees were going crazy and they were just flying around in circles outside and above the hive...but he never thought that they might have been swarming so he went inside and by the time he came out the excitment was over and everything looked fine. He didn't think it was swarming because we too had just put on a new medium super and gave them some sugar water in the feeder last week.

Why do you say "Also, it appears we need to plan for harvesting the honey from this hive that just split sooner than I had originally planned. "

.... I'm worried that if my hive did swarm that it will not produce enough honey for them or us.
